Head in to the heart of Wales where the rugged peaks and velvet slopes of the Cambrian Mountains create an absorbing backdrop to so many impressive landscapes that are also a wildlife watcher’s paradise!

You’ll be staying at the Metropole in Llandrindod Wells, an historic spa town complete with Victorian canopied streets and ornamental parks. This family-owned hotel is one of our all-time favourites and has performed consistently well for our customers since our earliest days of tour operation. Lovingly cared for by a loyal - and mostly local - team, we think it achieves the perfect ‘marriage’ of 21st century luxury and Victorian splendour!

Tour code: C3366

Cross the border into Wales and settle in at The Metropole.

Enjoy a midday stroll around the ‘book capital’ Hay-on-Wye, packed to the rafters with world renowned bookshops and tea rooms on the banks of the River Wye. This afternoon, take a guided tour of Hergest Croft Gardens in the heart of the Welsh Marches with views towards the Black Mountains. Rare plants and ‘Champion’ trees dot their way through the borders, old-fashioned Kitchen Garden, Azalea Garden, Maple Grove and Park Wood.

Spend a free morning at the hotel or in the town before experiencing a picturesque and panoramic ranger tour through the Elan Valley, within the rugged Cambrian Mountains. This unspoilt, living landscape is scattered with impressive Victorian dams and vast, still reservoirs that the experienced and knowledgeable rangers will guide you through.

Enjoy a scenic mountain drive to the Centre for Alternative Technology. This forward-thinking site provides inspirational solutions for sustainable living. Explore organic gardens, experimental building techniques, sustainably managed woodland and renewable energy tech with your interesting guide. Afterwards, enjoy free time in Aberystwyth on Cardigan Bay. Perhaps stretch your legs on the mile-long prom or take Britain’s longest cliff railway to Camera Obscura for 360-degree views of over 1000 sq miles!

Our journey home features a stop in the thriving, medieval market town of Ludlow where around 500 listed buildings line the pretty and historical streets. A criss-cross of back lanes are packed with antique, book and craft shops with the 11th century castle dominating the backdrop.
