Chelsea gold medalists have led the imaginative revival of these famous gardens, described by James Alexander Sinclair in The Telegraph as "The garden makeover of the decade". The Italian Garden retains its original 19th century framework but with a modern and stylish twist - in summer the wisteria, bearded iris and roses add pops of colour between the tranquil water features. At the heart of the garden is a peaceful and spectacular, mile-long, Capability Brown designed lake, studded with islands and alive with wildlife, including a beaver enclosure.

There's time for some summer shopping in Trentham's unique open-air Village, where independents and big brands are housed in 80 beautiful timber lodges. Popular names include Mountain Warehouse, Roman Originals, Denby, Holland & Barrett, Joules, L'Occitane, Pavers and Seasalt Cornwall, all of which sit neatly alongside independents selling everything from bronze sculptures to Scandinavian homeware.
