Why visit North Devon? Think towering cliffs, hidden coves, sweeping sea views, traditional Devonshire coastal towns and unique attractions. One minute you're riding the world-famous cliff railway between Lynton & Lynmouth, next you're on the cobbled streets of Clovelly where time seems to have stood still. North Devon is naturally relaxed, fishing villages hum quietly and sunsets arrive without an audience. It has a unique charm that feels authentic rather than curated.

Why visit with Shaws? In 2024 99% of our holiday customers said they would book again and 99% also said they would recommend us to a friend. Monday

Check in and stretch your legs in town before dinner.

Tuesday

Spend a day exploring three delightful Devonshire towns. Take a scenic drive through Exmoor National Park to Lynmouth where we’ve included a return ticket to ride the world’s highest and steepest totally water powered railway, which takes you to the top town of Lynton. Continue through beautiful scenery to the popular resort of Ilfracombe, with its pretty harbour and pastel-coloured houses, backed by dramatic cliffs.

Tuesday

See all the colours of spring at RHS Garden Rosemoor this morning. Look for Camassia in The Rose Gardens, Fuji cherry blossom in The Stone Garden and blue hues in the Cool Garden, which was redesigned in 2019. This afternoon, watch skilled glassmakers in action at Dartington Crystal during a self-guided factory experience. Learn about the history of this prestigious company in the new visitor centre and you’re bound to have your eye on a souvenir from one of Britain’s largest glass shops! Note: Stairs in the factory are unsuitable for walking aids, suitable footwear advised.

Wednesday

Spend the morning in the picturesque fishing village of Clovelly, once owned by William the Conqueror! At the top you’ll find neat and tended gardens, a Visitor Centre, resident donkeys and wonderful views from Mount Pleasant. The quaint quay at the bottom is sheltered by the steep cliffs behind, you’ll find boutique shops and galleries lining the cobbled streets on the famous walk down. Finish the day at Hartland Abbey & Gardens with private access to the cherished family home – which fans of Malory Towers will recognize! Stewards will be delighted to answer your questions before taking a walk through the garden’s early season blooms – which have recently appeared on BBC Gardeners’ World. Note: Steep cobbled streets down to Clovelly quay. Landovers are in operation if preferred (approx. £3.75pp). 12 shallow steps into Hartland Abbey.
