Tuesday
Celebrate Yorkshire’s most famous vet as we pay a morning visit to the World of James Herriot museum, the fully-restored site of his original 1940s home and veterinary practice (known in his books as Skeldale House) in Thirsk. Then, enjoy the landscape as we take the scenic route through The Dales to Grassington, this traditional market town was transformed into ‘Darrowby’ during the recent re-make of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’.
Wednesday
Spend the day at leisure in Harrogate or take the coach to nearby RHS Harlow Carr to wander amongst The Kitchen Garden, Woodland Walks, Alpine House, Lakeside Gardens and Rock Garden, to name but a few. Take the coach both ways or maybe you’d like to stroll back – it’s a lovely walk through the Pine Woods back to Valley Gardens, taking about an hour at a leisurely pace?
Thursday
Today’s Dales tour enjoys a morning stop in Masham, time for lunch at your leisure in Leyburn and an afternoon visit to Hawes. At Hawes, we include a visit to the Dales Countryside Museum for a fascinating glimpse of life in the Dales through the ages.
Friday
Our journey home includes a visit to 700-year-old Ripley Castle where we’ve arranged a guided tour of this impressive, turreted fortress. Learn about its military and political past and uncover tales of plague, persecution and revolution as you make your way through the oversized rooms with an experienced guide, bringing the castle’s history to life. Take time to wander in the Walled Gardens and amongst the large herbaceous borders, perhaps circle the lake or spot rare collections in the Kitchen Gardens, too.
