Monday
Check in with tea/coffee on arrival.
Tuesday
Uncover the area's Roman roots at Vindolanda Fort on Hadrian's Wall. Ongoing excavations mean that the artefacts constantly change but expect to find a rare 2000-year-old wooden toilet seat! Then to the Roman town of Corbridge where you may wish to hunt out the rare Roman armour and the Corbridge Lion in the museum (EH site approx. 15 mins walk from the centre of town). You'll also find some lovely independent shops and places to enjoy tea and cake.
Wednesday
Spend the morning in the historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its fine medieval Abbey. In 2014 The Big Story visitor centre opened bringing the Abbey’s 1300 history to life. This afternoon, discover the National Trust property at Wallington, an impressive home for an unconventional family full of quirky curiosities and surrounded by rolling hills, lakes and a hidden walled garden.
Thursday
Visit Britain’s original smart home at Cragside. This pioneering mansion is illuminated with hydro-electricity, powered by hydraulics and packed with Victorian gadgets designed for modern living. Its surrounded by a fantasy mountain landscape imagined by resident inventor Lord Armstrong with tumbling waterfalls and swathes of rhododendrons.
Friday
Depart after breakfast with a stop at Beamish en route home. This world-famous open-air museum guides you through life in the NE from the 1820's to the 1950's. Explore a 1900's town and colliery, take a look inside a pit village cottage, ride the colourful, heritage trams and experience wartime life on a 1940's farm. You’ll also find a fitting choice of eateries including a Tea Room, chip shop and pub.
