Start your summer on the English Riviera famous for its endless unspoilt coastline, colourful harbour towns and exotic palms. Much of Devon is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, soak up coast and country views during a return journey on the Dartmouth Steam Railway and enjoy scenery that inspired Agatha Christie during a River Dart cruise. Paignton's accessible beachfront and traditional Victorian pier make it the perfect destination for a gentle summer stroll. Perhaps the most interesting building in Paignton is Oldway, an opulent mansion built in 1874 by Isaac Singer (of the sewing machine family). Monday
Check in with tea/coffee.
Tuesday
Spend your morning at leisure, perhaps find a quiet spot at the end of Paignton’s picturesque 18th century harbour by following the steps down to Fairy Cove. Or, head to the Pier for traditional seaside fun! This afternoon, unwind within a rolling 18th century landscape at Saltram House. Discover delicate Chinese wallpapers, Sir Joshua Reynolds paintings, a Robert Adam Neo-classical Saloon, an ancient lime tree avenue and exotic planting at this Georgian jewel.
Wednesday
Steam your way from Paignton to Kingswear, through coast and country, along this scenic heritage line, then take the foot ferry over the River Dart to Dartmouth and board the boat for a 60-minute circular River Cruise. You’ll pass Dartmouth Castle and Agatha Christie’s Greenway House – wildlife spotting along the way. There’s free time to wander in this picturesque naval town before returning to the hotel, by train, soaking up the scenery in style.
Thursday
Spend the morning in the lively fishing port of Brixham where pastel-coloured houses climb high up the hillside, overlooking the harbour. Famous for its delicious seafood, an abundance of shops and eateries that line the harbourside and a mischievous history of pirates and smugglers! Spend the afternoon at leisure in Paignton enjoying its easily accessible beachfront and traditional promenade.
Friday
Time to head home.
