Tuesday
To Herstmonceux Castle this morning where the recent completion of a stunning restoration project has revealed the south wing’s beautiful parapet walls. Discover this moated castle’s rich past during a guided history tour before exploring the eight themed gardens that complement the castle’s splendour. The Elizabethan Garden boasts bright pinks and two Saucer magnolia trees in springtime. Enjoy Eastbourne at leisure this afternoon – perhaps marvel at over 5,000 pieces of intriguing modern British and international contemporary art at Tower Eastbourne (free entry), or simply enjoy time by the sea.
Wednesday
Visit the remarkable Gothic masterpiece that is Lancing College Chapel this morning. The building’s foundation stone was laid in 1868 and dedication took place in 2022. Members of the ‘Friends of Lancing Chapel’ will guide you through its journey. Spend the afternoon in Sussex’s liveliest city – Brighton. 18th century party animal George IV fell in love with Brighton and made it a magnet for visitors! Sightsee amongst iconic landmarks including the Royal Pavilion’s exotic architecture (entry not included) and the 1,772ft long Palace Pier, or head to The Lanes for quirky shopping in narrow alleys and hidden squares. Return to the hotel through rolling South Downs countryside.
Thursday
Spend the morning on the ancient medieval streets of Rye, on market day, with its cobbled alleys and relaxed atmosphere. This afternoon, visit a world-renowned place of pilgrimage for horticulturalists – Great Dixter House & Gardens. Enjoy the scents and scenes of The Sunk Garden, The Exotic Garden, The Peacock Garden and Topiary Lawn all of which offer a pretty view of the preserved medieval house that they surround, in which you’ll find one of the largest surviving timber-framed halls in England! Garden and house stewards are on hand to answer any questions.
