Sunday

The adventure begins! Check in at your 4* overnight hotel in Lockerbie, enjoying peaceful views of the Dumfries & Galloway countryside. Pause, en route, in the ancient market town of Northallerton, in the heart of Yorkshire. Don’t miss Barkers Department Store and some lovely independents on the High Street.

Monday

Continue north, getting a taste of the Highlands during a break in Pitlochry, soaking up its rich clan history and taking a wander along the traditional main street. Amazing views await as we travel through the Cairngorm Mountains, joining the legendary NC500 at Muir of Ord. Take this iconic route to the Victorian spa town of Strathpeffer, a bustling Scottish village with many independents. Check in at your home for the next four nights, The Gairloch Hotel, nestled on Gairloch Bay with spectacular views of the world famous Isle of Skye.

Tuesday

Tackle the northern section of the Wester Ross NC500 with an incredible drive up to the charming fishing village of Ullapool. Known as the bustling gateway to the Outer Hebrides, it boasts breath-taking views over Loch Broom and you’ll find interesting local displays in Ullapool Museum (small entry fee). From here, will you brave the viewing platform at Corrieshalloch Gorge (NTS)? This incredible natural attraction is one of the most spectacular gorges in Britain, a Victorian suspension bridge and cantilevered platform hover over the crashing River Droma with mesmerising views of the Falls of Measach that plummets beneath. Perhaps grab a coffee from the new £3m Gateway to Nature facility and enjoy the view! Note: Short, steep walk to the bridge.

Wednesday

Head south on the NC500 and board the world-famous Kyle Line at Achnasheen to take the 70-minute ScotRail journey to the Kyle of Lochalsh. Hug the shores of Loch Carron, the bay at Plockton (where the BBC’s Hamish Macbeth was filmed) before following the coastline and disembarking with wonderful views of the impressive Skye Bridge. There’s time for a photo stop and to pop into The Kyle Line Museum before reboarding the train, museum staff will wave you goodbye with a choice of tea/coffee and shortbread to sip on the return journey to Attadale Station. A member of the passionate garden team will greet you at Attadale Station and lead you through the secret gate entrance to the heart of Attadale Gardens. Explore 20 acres of beautiful early autumn flora and fauna, including water gardens, a Japanese garden and unique sculptures. Board the coach and return, via the NC500, to the hotel. Note: Small café at Attadale, we recommend pre ordering a picnic lunch at £10pp, please ask us for menu choices.

Thursday

Enjoy a morning at leisure on Gairloch Bay, perhaps relax on one of the secluded beaches with views across to the Isle of Skye, stroll along the coast to the village where you’ll find changing exhibitions in The Gairloch Museum (small entry fee), or grab a coffee with a view at the community inspired Gare Centre. This afternoon, discover the rare species that flourish in Inverewe Gardens (NTS), a unique location where the Gulf Stream meets the Highlands. Wildlife thrives at this lochside oasis, you might be lucky enough to spot one of Scotland’s Big 5 - they even have a resident harbour seal colony! Back to the hotel for your final night here, where we hope you will be treated to a beautiful sunset over the Inner Hebrides. Note: A local coach company will be used this afternoon.

Friday

Complete the final section of the NC500 towards Inverness before heading south and pausing in the Cairngorms at Aviemore. Continue south, taking an obligatory photo stop at Helix Park - home of The Kelpies, the largest equine sculptures in the world and a 5-star Visitor Centre. Return to Lockerbie for a final night in bonnie Scotland at the 4* Dryfesdale Hotel.
