Why visit the Isle of Man? This beautiful island has the best of both worlds - deep green rolling countryside and endless sandy beaches that offer up some of Britain’s best wildlife watching spots. The island has a unique heritage of motorsport, folklore, Vikings and smugglers and you’ll find nods to it all across the island’s many attractions. One of the best ways to experience the Isle of Man is with a ride on the original Victorian and Edwardian rail lines and we’ve arranged no less than three heritage journeys for you to enjoy. Download interesting heritage walks in Douglas and Castletown, these self-guided walks from Visit Isle of Man will allow you to get to know the area at your own pace.

Saturday

After being collected from home, get comfy in your reserved, executive class seat as you make your way to Heysham for the 14:15 sailing to Douglas, arriving on the Isle of Man at 18:00, just in time for dinner. Soak up views of Morecambe Bay and The Lake District as you cross the Irish Sea.

Sunday

Meet retired polo horses, tram horses and broodmares at the Home of Rest for Old Horses. Over 90 horses roam these lush green fields, enjoying their final years being pampered by the loving team. Continue to the island’s ancient capital of Castletown, with picturesque fishing cottages along the harbour and a superbly preserved Viking castle towering above. Make your way back to the hotel in style by boarding Britain’s longest, narrow gauge railway. The original locomotives and carriages offer a nostalgic way of enjoying the island's charming countryside as you ride from Port Erin back to Douglas.

Monday

Spend your day at leisure by the coast in Douglas. Enjoy a book on the beach, uncover Viking hoards in the Manx Museum (donation entry), wander in the Promenade Gardens, download a Heritage Walk (link in the destination tab) or perhaps take time to scout out some local treats in the town’s shops and cafés.

Tuesday

Enjoy a coastal ride on the Manx Electric Railway this morning, from Derby Castle to Laxey on one of the beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian trams. At Laxey we’ll transfer to the Snaefell Mountain Railway and ascend this incredible line to experience spectacular summit views - 2036 feet above sea level! Back to the roads to uncover the IOM’s famous motoring history with a visit to the Motor Museum – a petrolhead’s paradise, full of classic cars and rare motorcycles. Highlights include the record breaking 500 Manxman, steam cars, a Cadillac V16 and 1953 Humber Super Snipe tourer used by Queen Elizabeth II.

Wednesday

Begin the day on the west coast in Peel, a beautiful bay with a long sandy beach enclosed by a medieval castle, a lively harbour, striking red cliffs and a promenade (often) selling local tasty treats. Then, ride out to the island’s southernmost tip to enjoy some of the nation’s greatest scenery from The Sound (where you’ll also find a delicious café with panoramic views). Return to Douglas for a guided tour of Tynwald – the island’s parliament – which claims to be the oldest continuous parliamentary assembly in the world! Please note that some parts of Tynwald are only accessible by stairs.

It’s an early start for the 08:30 sailing back to the mainland, docking in Heysham at 12:15 before making our final journey home.
