Why visit Lancashire? Think Lancashire, think hotpot and cheese! Whilst this friendly county is famous for traditional tasty temptations, it’s also renowned for some of the prettiest scenery in England – including the Ribble Valley inside the beautiful Forest of Bowland. The Forest of Bowland is a designated National Landscape – a place where people live, work and come to breathe. There’re many ways to enjoy this incredible landscape during this tour – by canal, by road, and by rail. Get to know the area’s industrial history with a tour of Leighton Hall (home of the famous furniture makers) and experience a glass blowing demonstration at The World of Glass.

Monday

After being collected from home, get comfy in your reserved, executive class seat as you make your way to the Delta by Marriott Preston, perhaps make use of the hotel leisure facilities before dinner.

Tuesday

Follow the winding drive to Leighton Hall, the much-loved home of the Gillow furniture making family with an 800-year history. Each room, from the modest chapel to the imposing dining room is still in use and with no roped-off areas there’s so much to see! Outside, expect fine country views, colourful borders and a 19th century Walled Garden. This afternoon take a country cruise along the Lancaster Canal enjoying views of the Bowland Hills and keeping an eye (and ear) out for the resident herons, swallows, kingfishers and cormorants.

Tuesday

Ride from the market town of Bury, following the pretty River Irwell through lush green countryside, to the village of Rawtenstall on the East Lancashire Railway. From here, continue north to Oswaldtwistle Mills where over 100 retailers are uniquely housed inside a former Weaving Mill - they’ve recently enhanced the shopping experience with a huge store refit! Sit back and watch the scenery roll by on a guided coach tour through the beautiful Ribble Valley. Hear stories from one of Roman Britain’s largest ports, one of Queen Elizabeth II’s homes and even Sherlock Holmes!

Wednesday

Be blown away at The World of Glass inside the Victorian town of St Helens. Watch a glass blowing demonstration, see glass that has survived 3000 years and cross a glass bridge towards The Tank House to discover how it all began! Then, to Bolton, for a traditional fish and chip lunch before a scenic drive through the fells and moors back to the hotel, past Winter Hill and the Belmont Reservoir.

Thursday

After breakfast we’ll head home but not before pausing at RHS Bridgewater to see the most recent addition to the RHS collection in the height of summer. At the horticultural heart is an 11-acre Victorian Walled Garden – one of the largest in the UK, and look for the new Music Pavilion in the Chinese Streamside Garden.
