Monday
Check in with tea/coffee at your riverside hotel.
Tuesday
Cross the paved causeway and spend time exploring the remote, unspoilt scenery and fascinating history of tidal Holy Island. Continue to Bamburgh Castle, a 1,400-year-old coastal fortress that went on to become the home of Victorian inventor William Armstrong. There’s plenty to discover with State Rooms full of global treasures, battle-scarred weapons in The Armoury, Anglo-Saxon Archaeology and much more.
Wednesday
After a lazy start to the day, spend time, as the Romans did, in Northumberland National Park. The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre is a unique building with a rooftop walk, café and shop, and for those with their walking boots it’s just 15 minutes’ from Hadrian’s Wall. You’ll find interesting exhibitions and the largest section of the Sycamore Gap tree. From here, experience the edge of the empire at The Roman Army Museum. Uncover the life of a Roman Soldier in three wonderful galleries and soar like an eagle across Northumberland during an immersive HD film.
Thursday
Visit Britain’s original smart home at Cragside (NT). This pioneering mansion is illuminated with hydroelectricity, powered by hydraulics and packed with Victorian gadgets. It’s surrounded by a fantasy mountain landscape, featuring tumbling waterfalls, imagined by resident inventor Lord Armstrong. This afternoon, use the hotel as a base to explore Newcastle-Gateshead. The two areas, united by seven iconic bridges over The Tyne, are simply bursting with personality, shops and attractions! Please note: A major roof restoration is taking place at Cragside meaning that scaffolding and pedestrian walkways are in place and the terrain at Cragside is varied, with uneven stone steps, sturdy footwear recommended.
Friday
After breakfast, and before heading home, step back in time at Beamish - The Living Museum of the North where a multi-million-pound project has seen the opening of exciting new exhibits including a 1950s Town & Farm, a Bus Depot and an expansion of the 1820s Landscape.
