Why visit Snowdonia? Autumn in this colossal National Park is the time that locals secretly love. The crowds are gone, the scenery turns a shade of copper, amber, and deep red and the misty mornings somehow make the mountains look even bigger! Long golden sunsets stretch into the evenings and big skies take over the day. This tour ticks off a huge bucket list moment with a train ride to the very top of Mount Snowdon - the highest point in England and Wales.

Why visit with Shaws? In 2024 99% of our holiday customers said they would book again and 99% also said they would recommend us to a friend. Monday

Check in at one of our favourite hotels - The Celtic Royal - in the heart of Caernarfon.

Tuesday

Steam along the UK’s longest heritage railway from the new station at Caernarfon, past the foot of Snowdon and through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass, all the way to Porthmadog, on a two-hour journey through unforgettable scenery on the Welsh Highland Railway. Panoramic windows ensure unrivalled views of ancient woodland, mountains, rivers and castles. Then to the unique, Italian-inspired village of Portmeirion - with colour-washed buildings and a Mediterranean central piazza. Clough Williams-Ellis envisaged this coastal village in the mid-1920s to prove that a beautiful location could be developed without spoiling it.

Wednesday

Cameras at the ready as we take a scenic drive through Snowdonia, pausing in the pretty town of Betws-Y-Coed, where you’ll find some lovely local shops and be mesmerised by the crashing rapids that rush under the ancient bridge. This afternoon, reach the highest point in England and Wales – an astonishing 1,085m above sea level – as you conquer Snowdon’s summit with an unforgettable journey on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Awe inspiring views await from your heritage diesel-hauled carriage on a line which is celebrating 130 triumphant years! Pause at the UK’s highest visitor centre, Hafod Eryri, to discover more of the mountain’s secrets, before descending to Llanberis. Note: Trains run in all weather, but in rare cases extreme winds may cause trains to cancel or terminate. No toilet on the train.

Thursday

Penrhyn Castle (NT) looks spectacular in autumn as the red Virginia Creeper covers the outer walls and the trees acquire a golden glow. Soak up coastal and mountain views, and wander within the elaborately decorated State Rooms. Penrhyn was once the home of an extremely wealthy slate quarry owner. Now, it’s proud to hold artefacts from the National Slate Museum on the Move collection. Spend your final afternoon at leisure in Caernarfon, on the shores of the Menai Strait.
